Page one of IRS Form 1040 and Form 1040NR requires that you attach Schedule F to report a farm income or loss. You can not file Schedule F with one of the shorter IRS forms such as Form 1040A or Form 1040EZ. Schedule F is a two page tax form which lists the major sources of farm income and farm expense. The end result is the net farm profit or loss amount transfered to Form 1040.
Examples of when to use Schedule F:
- You own or operate a farm: livestock, produce, grains, greenhouse, nursery, floriculture, dairy, aquaculture, etc.
- Operate as a sole proprietor or one owner LLC.
- Receive distributions from a cooperative.
- Buy and resell livestock.
- Received a crop insurance or disaster payment.
- Receive agricultural program payments.

Schedule F form and instructions booklet are generally updated in December of each year by the IRS. If updated, the 2018 tax year PDF file will display, the prior tax year 2017 if not.
