US citizens and resident aliens in general will file federal Form 1040 beginning with the 2018 - 2019 income tax preparation season. Nonresident individuals will continue to file Form 1040NR. Residents of Commonwealth states will likewise continue to file either Form 1040PR in Spanish or Form 1040SS in English.

The 2018 Form 1040 has been redesigned to allow all US resident taxpayers to use the same IRS income tax form. Sections of the 1040 Long Form where split off into the new Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule 3, Schedule 4, Schedule 5, and Schedule 6. The previous Form 1040 supporting Schedule A, Schedule B, Schedule C, Schedule C EZ, Schedule D, Schedule E, Schedule EIC, Schedule F, Schedule H, Schedule R, and Schedule SE are still in use. Simply follow the instructions and include the schedules that you need to complete your federal income tax return.

To get started, download, save, print, and prepare either Form 1040 (all years), Form 1040EZ (prior years), Form 1040A (prior years), and the corresponding form instructions booklet. The first few pages of each federal instructions booklet will explain which income tax form to use. The instructions book will also contain the federal tax rate tables, explain where to mail your federal income tax forms, when income taxes are due, and how to look up the status of your 2018 income tax refund. When are 2018 federal and state tax forms due?

Federal income tax forms for calendar year 2018 are due April 15, 2019. For most income tax filers, both federal and state income tax forms must be postmarked by this filing due date to avoid penalties and late fees. Income tax preparation sites may refer to this time of year as the 2018 - 2019 tax season. Keep in mind, however, that your income tax forms and instructions booklet should display the year 2018 on them.

State income tax forms in all but five states are due on April 15, 2019. Of those five non-conforming states, the most popular state income tax due date for this tax season is April 30, 2019. Most state income tax forms will refer to the income, adjustments, and credit amounts entered onto your 2018 federal tax forms. For this reason, it's important that you print and prepare your federal IRS income tax forms in advance of trying to print and prepare your 2018 state tax forms.

What happens if you miss the federal or state filing deadline? If you are required to file and owe income taxes to the IRS or state DOR, you are expected to mail in an extension of time to file request form and make an estimated tax payment prior to the filing due date. Then, you can send in your income tax forms a bit later with interest and possibly penalty charges forthcoming. Once the IRS or DOR has processed your income tax return, you can request a payment schedule from them by mail-in form or by phone if necessary.

What if I forgot to file Form 1040EZ, Form 1040A, Form 1040 from last year or the year before last?

Don't stress yourself out if you forgot or didn't have time to complete your 2017 tax forms or 2016 tax forms. The IRS will not charge you a failure to file penalty if you are due an income tax refund from a prior year. However, if you try to file and claim a refund 3 years after its filing due date, the IRS will not pay you the refund. In other words, you have 3 years to claim an income tax refund. If you still have your W2 or 1099 forms from 2016 and 2017 lying around, go ahead and claim your income tax refund from the IRS using easy form 1040EZ, short form 1040A, or long form 1040. Contact your employer's payroll department if you lost your W2 or form 1099 and need a copy to file a late tax return.

The IRS may charge you a failure to file penalty plus interest if you file late and owe the IRS back taxes. There is no statute of limitations for assessing and collecting income tax due if no return has been filed. As we mentioned previously, the IRS expects to receive an extension of time to file request form and an estimated income tax payment prior to each filing due date. If you are late and owe the IRS back taxes, the first step is to print and prepare your 2016, 2017, and 2018 income tax forms so that you know how much money you owe. The second step is to read the How To Get Tax Help section of the most recent 2018 Form 1040EZ, 2018 Form 1040A, or 2018 Form 1040 instructions booklet.
