Mississippi Tax Brackets 2016 - 2017

Looking at the tax rate and tax brackets shown in the tables above for Mississippi, we can see that Mississippi collects individual income taxes differently for Single and Married filing statuses, for example. We can also see the progressive nature of Mississippi state income tax rates from the lowest MS tax rate bracket of 3% to the highest MS tax rate bracket of 5%.

For single taxpayers living and working in the state of Mississippi:

  • Tax rate of 3% on the first $5,000 of taxable income.
  • Tax rate of 4% on taxable income between $5,001 and $10,000.
  • Tax rate of 5% on taxable income over $10,000.

For married taxpayers living and working in the state of Mississippi:

  • Tax rate of 3% on the first $10,000 of taxable income.
  • Tax rate of 4% on taxable income between $10,001 and $20,000.
  • Tax rate of 5% on taxable income over $20,000.

For the Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household filing statuses, the MS tax rates and the number of tax brackets remain the same. Notice, however, the Mississippi income tax brackets increase for Married Filing Jointly from $5,000 to $10,000 (double) at 3%, and increase from $10,000 to $20,000 (double) at 5% the highest tax bracket. Married Filing Separately income tax brackets are one half that of the Married Filing Jointly income tax brackets in the state of Mississippi.
