Printable State 540 / 540-2EZ Tax Form and Instructions

Printable California (CA) state income tax form 540 or 540-2EZ must be postmarked by April 18, 2017 in order to avoid penalties and late fees. Printable California state tax forms for the current tax year will be based on income earned between January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016. The California income tax rate for 2016 is progressive from a low of 1% to a high of 13.30% (including the 1% Mental Health Services Tax). 2016 California 540-2EZ Tax Form and Instructions

You cannot use California Form 540-2EZ if:

  • Your income is over $100,000.
  • You file a joint tax return and either spouse/RDP was a nonresident.
  • You are married/RDP and file a separate tax return.
  • You have income from a source outside of California.
  • You have income from a source not listed on the form.
  • You made estimate tax payments.
  • You have an estimated tax payment transfer.
  • You have Real Estate or Other Withholding from Form 592-B or Form 593.

The State of California Franchise Tax Board will expect your 2016 income tax forms to be printed on high quality printers. Today's laser, bubble-jet, or ink-jet printers are generally acceptable. Color printing is not required, however, we recommend that you read the first few page of the 540 Instructions booklet for updates regarding the printing of your state tax forms.

California State Income Tax Refund Status

To check the status of your 540 income tax refund online, visit the State of California Franchise Tax Board website and use their Check Your Refund Status service. State of California Franchise Tax Board estimates that it will take 7-10 days to receive your refund from an electronically filed return and 8-12 weeks for a mailed in paper return. To retrieve the status of your CA income tax refund for 2016 you will need the following information:

  • Social Security Number.
  • Mailing address.
  • Refund amount.

The requested information must match what was submitted on your 540 state income tax forms for the current year. To look up prior year refunds, you will need to contact the State of California Franchise Tax Board service center by phone, email, or mail.
