September 14, 2007
Tracy, California — Nobody understands the importance of safe driving better than 17 year-old Justin Philpott, driver of the TaxBrain.com car (Whelen All-American Series). On September 16, 2007 at 2:00pm, Justin Philpott and the Philpott Racing family are going to 'Get Real Behind the Wheel in support of the “Safe Teen Driver” cause at the Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, California.
Ken Ucci, founded the Tracy, California chapter of Get Behind the Wheel, after his son passed in a car accident that also severely injured his sister and four of his classmates. Ucci's organization is coordinating weekly teen driving training and demonstrations and parents and teens are encouraged to show their support while practicing safe driving skills in a mock city environment. A special track will give participants the opportunity to practice driving in low light, icy or slick conditions and experience other driving hazards such as sudden obstacles and distracting cell-phone calls. Professional driver Justin Phillpot, will take students out in the TaxBrain.com racecar and show them what it is like to hydroplane. “I drive in a steel-reinforced cage, wearing a helmet and flame-suit,” says Justin “so when I get behind the wheel of my truck, I'm much more vulnerable”
Get Real Behind the Wheel and Safe Teen Driver are non-profit organizations committed to promoting both parent and teen driving accountability. Founder, Bruce Murakami, lost his wife and daughter when teenager Justin Cabezas, drag racing in a rented car, crashed into their van.
